CAREGIVER CONSULTING: You don’t have to do this alone!
What Do Caregiver Consultants Do?
A Caregiver Consultant is a trained professional who works one‑on‑one with caregivers. They help caregivers manage stress, solve problems, and stay healthy while caring for someone else.
These services are available statewide through the Minnesota Board on Aging and local Area Agencies on Aging, including MNRAAA.

Access Needs and Strengths
Consultants start by getting to know the caregiver. They talk about the caregiver’s situation, strengths, challenges, and what support they need. This can be done through private conversations by phone, video, or in person.
Create a Personalized Support Plan
A consultant helps the caregiver make a plan based on their goals. The plan may include:
- Ways to balance caregiving with daily life
- Finding resources like respite care (short‑term help that gives caregivers a break)
- Support groups, classes, and community programs
Provide Ongoing Support
As caregiving needs change, consultants offer continued help. This may include:
- Support with making decisions
- Help coping with behavior or personality changes
- Ongoing guidance in finding and using resources
- Help planning and leading family meetings
Offer Skills Training and Education
Consultants may teach caregivers:
- Information about diseases or conditions
- Communication and conflict‑resolution skills
- Stress management and self-care techniques
Who Do They Serve?
Caregiver Consultants support:
- Adults caring for someone age 60 or older
- Adults caring for someone with a disability
- Relatives age 60 or older caring for children
Training and Professional Standards
Caregiver Consultants receive special training from the Minnesota Board on Aging. They must meet education or work‑experience requirements and follow professional standards. They commit to being culturally responsive, keeping information private, and acting in an ethical and respectful way.
